Pilsner Ghost Sign

This ghost sign is definitely one that is tucked away behind some old buildings in the warehouse district. Blink and you miss it. The sign is located on the back of the Fries Tallman Lumber building at 1737 Dewdney, hiding on a chimney only seen from St John Street. The sign is faded, but if you’ve ever been into a liquor store in Saskatchewan, you can recognize it as the Pilsner logo. Fries Tallman has been in the building since 1956. Pilsner may be a Saskatchewan associated beer because of the Rough Riders, but history originates in a German immigrant of Alberta. In 1901, Fritz Sick moved to Lethbridge and over the next 15 years he turned his brewing company “Alberta Brewing and Malting Co.” into a successful business. His grandson, Molson Pilsner continued the brewing legacy until the Lethbridge brewery was shut down in 1990, but the beer still lives on.
