Smeeds & Vanlines Ghost Sign

The Ackerman Building at 2128 Dewdney Avenue has ghost signs on both east and west sides of the building. The bright orange signs advertise Agents for Allied Van Lines, while the more faded black signs advertise Smeeds Storage and Shipping. This Chicago-style building was built in 1911 for B.F. Ackerman Son & Co., and by 1912 the building was home to many businesses including J.J. Turner Tents & Awnings, the Kellogg Switchboard & Supply Co., and the Ackerman firm. Other occupants of this building have been Hudson Bay Company, Great West Saddlery, Van lines, and Smeed Security. Smeeds Security Storage Limited purchased the building in December of 1944. At the time it was built, it was the largest warehouse in Regina, and in 1991 was designated as a Municipal Heritage Property. When the tornado of 1912 hit Regina, the top three floors of the Ackerman building were destroyed, although quickly rebuilt. This was one of the first warehouses in this district to be turned into condos.
