What is a Ghost Sign?

Ghost signs can be seen throughout Regina. They are the hand painted advertisements you see on the sides of old buildings in the Queen City. These signs had been popular between the 1890’s to the 1960’s, until cheaper, more ready designs like vinyl banners and billboards came along. Regina at the turn of the century was a fast growing boom town and the Ghost signs are remnants of that past. The majority of these signs are in Warehouse District. The current protection for these murals are on designated heritage buildings, as the facade of the building is protected in that status.

The REM plans to catalog the ghost signs to highlight and celebrate Regina’s unique history. Keep an eye out for more posts about the ghost sign’s location and history!
