Haunted Places: The Government House
The Government House on 4607 Dewdney Avenue is known for being a main haunt of Regina, which is not surprising as the Victorian-Style residence was built in 1891. Doors will open and close on their own, sounds of footsteps, crying, laughing and music boxes playing can be heard when no one is around, and artefacts end up in different rooms with no explanation. The building was the home and office of Saskatchewan's Lieutenant Governor and family, as well as a place to stay for monarchs visiting prior to the Hotel Saskatchewan was built in the city. Currently, the residence section of the building is a heritage museum reflecting the look of the building in 1905. This area is home to the ghost known as “Howie” who was Cheun Lee, a cook who worked in the building from 1936 until his death in 1945. Employees often hear Howie walking around the house, which is distinctive because of a pair of slippers he was known to wear, and his ghost has appeared in the area that used to be the kitchen. He apparently also rearranges items, until the staff leaves them where he wants them to be.
One visitor that was on an after-hours tour of the building says that the group had left the building, and after they exited the group leader did a count and radioed back to the security that everyone was out of the building and that he could lock up. The tour guide started talking about the grounds when another visitor pointed out that there was someone in the upstairs window. Everyone looked and could see a figure standing in the window, which made them do another count as there was only one security guard in another part of the building. Everyone in the group was there, so he radioed security to which the guard went and checked and there was nobody in the building. Children have also seen a ghost monkey in the building jumping across the chandelier, and there used to be a pet monkey in the house.
