Smith Street is named for Donald A. Smith who was one of the four trustees charged with administering the Regina townsite for the North-West Land Company. Smith was present when Regina was christened on August 23, 1882. In 1838, Smith became an apprentice clerk at the Hudson Bay Company, and by 1889 he became the governor of the company. Albeit not formally, Smith risked his personal fortune in 1882 to keep the Canadian Pacific Railroad build venture afloat, which lead to him receiving the honour of driving the last spike to complete the railway on November 7, 1885.
